101 Poker Club Katy Details
The 101 Poker Club in Katy, Texas, a Houston suburb, is one of the top places for poker in the Lone Star State. It is also a great place to grab a delicious bite to eat.
What sets 101 Poker ahead of the rest is that the food options are far greater than most other Texas poker rooms. The added benefit of being served a delicious meal at the poker table makes for a pleasant experience. But it's not all about the grub at 101 Poker Club because the poker is solid as well.
When PokerNews traveled across the state on a week-long road trip in March 2022, 101 Katy was our final destination and it was a great place to wrap up a long journey that included over 25 card rooms. We were immediately impressed with the decor inside the spacious room and came away with a strong impression of the ownership after meeting with co-owner Doug Freiss.
Cash Games at 101 Poker Club
The cash games at 101 Poker Club is what draws in players more than anything else (except maybe the food). There are multiple reasons why this is a hot spot in the crowded Houston poker market, most notably the juicy games.
There are two main games played at 101 Poker Club $1/$3 no-limit hold'em and $5/$5 no-limit hold'em. Both games play bigger than you might expect, especially if you aren't familiar with Texas poker.
No-limit Texas hold'em isn't the only game at this social poker club. Pot-limit Omaha is another game that brings out some intense action and loose players, both in $1/$3 and $5/$5 games.
As is the case in all legal Texas poker rooms, the business operates as a social club. What that means is players are charged a membership fee (weekly/monthly/annually) along with an hourly seat fee. But don't worry, that doesn't mean you'll pay more to play poker at a Texas card room than elsewhere. That is because there is no rake taken out of the pots as doing so would be illegal, per Texas Penal Code 47.04.
Tournament Offerings
While cash games are amazing at 101 Poker Club, this location also has some juicy tournaments, including regular freerolls that pay out five-figures. The tournaments here are all inexpensive and have a guaranteed prize pool attached. That goes for the freerolls and the regular events.
On Mondays and Wednesdays at 7 p.m., there is a $100 buy-in no-limit hold'em freezeout tournament with $2,000 guaranteed. At the same time on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 101 Poker Club hosts a dirt cheap $20 buy-in rebuy event, which also features a minimum $2,000 prize pool. The latter tournament brings out some wild action as many players show up willing to fire at least a few bullets to get their hands on that enticing prize pool.
Every Sunday, the card room's most popular tournament takes place at 3 p.m. $20 rebuy Bomb Pot with $2,000 guaranteed. The club also offers monthly freerolls, and players can earn tickets by playing cash games regularly.
Connection to 101 Poker Richmond
101 Poker Katy is one of the most popular rooms in Houston. In December 2021, Sanjeev Vora bought the poker room previously owned by Poker Hall of Famer Johnny Chan (88 Social) and renamed it 101 Poker Richmond, located across town from the original 101. These poker rooms, although using the same brand, are owned separately.
However, Vora and Freiss have a partnership agreement in place for major tournaments. So, there is a connection and respect between the two Houston area poker clubs that share the same name.
